McSpadden House Shady Grove 1804 Built by Samuel McSpadden, who had agunpowder factory on the site. McSpadden supplied Andrew Jackson's armyin the Battle of New Orleans (1814). Currently a private residence.

Born Oct 10, 1756. marr. (1) Polly Berry, (2) Sarah Keyes, 1782,Rockbridge, VA. marr. (3) Nancy Harris in TN.

Rev. War Vet. On Feb. 7, 1834, Samuel McSpadden appeared before a Justiceof the Peace in Jefferson County and applied for a pension for hisservices in the Revolutionary War.

He stated that he was 78, that in 1775, in Rockbridge County, Virginia,he was drafted, reported at Lexington, VA, and enrolled in CaptainCharles Campbell's Company, commanded by Colonel Dickerson. That hemarched to Point Pleasant on the Ohio River, where he served as a privatefor 3 months, and received a discharge which he lost.

In 1776, he was drafted again, enrolled in McDowell's Company, marched toDonley's Fort on the frontier of Greenbrier County, Virginia, commandedby Colonel Donley. He helped guard the fort for 3 months, received adischarge which he also lost. His pension was granted.

Samuel McSpadden (1756-1844) came to Jefferson Co., TN in 1792 andclaimed his large land grant which he received from the government aspart payment for his military service in the Revolutionary War. He firstbuilt a log home down the hill from the present home.

Old Pete, committed to Alva McSpadden's care as long as he should live,lived in the "Old Brick" until his death. He probably was a child at thetime of Samuel's death. He died after 1892. Samuel built "The Old Brick",the ancestral home in Jefferson Co. in 1804.

He made the gun powder used by Andrew Jackson to win the Battle of NewOrleans in 1814.

Justin Oliver McSpadden has a story about the delivery of the gunpowderto New Orleans and Sam's subsequent efforts to collect from theGovernment. The details of this story are also written in AnnaMcSpadden's book - "Way Back When".

Twice married and had 20 children. (Some reports say married three timesbut no issue of the first marriage).

Tennessee the Volunteer State 1769–1923: Volume 2 JOHN THOMPSON HENDERSON. For fourteen years John Thompson Henderson has been general secretary of the Laymen's Missionary Movement of the Southern Baptist Convention. He is one of Knoxville's highly esteemed citizens and is actively identified with many important business interests here. He was born near Belltown, Tennessee, on the 27th of July, 1858, on his father's farm, a son of Benjamin Peck and Margaret Adaline (Hammontree) Henderson. The Hendersons are of Scotch descent and members of the family came to this country prior to the Revolution. William Henderson, gentleman, of Fifeshire, Scotland, was born on the 30th of April, 1676, and married Margaret Bruce of Ulster, Ireland, on the 7th of February, 1705. They came to America after their marriage and located in Augusta county, Virginia. His demise occurred on the 1st of August, 1738, and she died on the 15th of December, 1739 John Henderson, the paternal grandfather of John Thompson Henderson, was born in Virginia and moved to Jefferson county, Tennessee, as a young man. He was a contractor and built many of the old colonial homes standing in Monroe and adjoining counties. He married Dorcas McSpadden, whose father, Samuel McSpadden, made the powder used in the War of 1812. His farm was on the French Broad river, just below Dandridge, and from his powder factory, the only one in the south, the powder was shipped by flatboat down the river to New Orleans, there to be used by General Jackson and his forces. Mr. McSpadden was born on the 26th of September, 1790. Benjamin Peck Henderson was born in Dandridge in 1821 and his parents moved to Belltown when he was but a child. His father was justice of the peace there for some years. Upon reaching man's estate he engaged in farming and achieved substantial success as an agriculturist. He was a quiet, unassuming man of great industry, and possessed a very high sense of honor, well meriting the confidence and esteem in which he was held by his fellowmen. He was a consistent member of the Presbyterian church. His demise occurred in 1893 and came as a severe shock to all who knew him. Mrs. Henderson was born on her father's farm in Monroe county, Tennessee. Her father, Jacob Hammontree, was born in East Tennessee. Her demise occurred in September, 1913.
